Maesgwynne Valley 27th June.

A large group of noisy fledged birds in the canopy almost like a flock you might suddenly encounter in an Asian forest, mostly tits & a few Robins one still being fed by a parent. On the path down my first Golden Ringed Dragonfly of the year. Archive pic from one a few years ago.

Silver Washed Fritillary

My first Silver Washed Fritillary of the year at Llanychaer this afternoon, also a group of at least 15 Mistle Thrushes.

The area were a pair of Dartford Warblers have bred for several years has been mainly cleared of gorse just bracken now,no sign of any birds on the three visits  to the site since the clearing happened.

Woody's

The all red crown of this bird makes it a juvenile, nice they've bred close by.

Flagpoles 14.00

Three Sandwich Terns feeding was quite good for June, nothing else apart from single Greater & Lesser Black Backs & a few Herring Gulls & Oystercatchers.

Hoodie

Hi Cliff

Take a look at Pembs blog 23 April 2011 !

This is your second Strumble Hoodie!

Nice find

A Strumble first for me!

Strumble Hoodie!

A Strumble first for me, a Hoodie Crow, not a great shot but a reasonable record shot... seen this afternoon about three o clock. It posed nicely on a fence post on the straight just before the bend which leads to the cattle grid and car park. My camera was in the back of the car and of course it flew off into the field as I went to get it. I fired off a quick shot but it flipped up and flew over the hedge bank behind me, disappearing in the direction of Tresinwen.

Flagpoles 14.00 / OBW

At the Ocean Lab end 1st & 2nd Summer Med. Gulls on the groyne, can be quite a scarce bird at the harbour in June.
Very little of bird interest on breakwater but a quite large Otter was seen briefly.

Pale Buzzard...

On our way to a porpoise watch at Strumble we came across this rather beautiful pale buzzard! sadly I only got this shot with it partially obscured.

Goshawk

A female Goshawk at Llanychaer late afternoon which had caught a Jackdaw, the other Jackdaws and Carrion Crows where mobbing the Goshawk and being very vocal which was what drew my attention in the first place. This morning both fledgling Redstarts and Treecreepers seen.

On the 4th a Black tailed Skimmer in the garden, thanks to Paul Grennard for the ID.

Great Crested Grebe update.

There were the pair plus three young Great Crested Grebes at Rosebush today, last week I thought there were only two on the presumed females back. Today all three are swimming around and looking healthy and being fed regularly by the parents.
Also a Painted Lady butterfly seen here and Tree Pipit.

Pen Anglas

This morning off Pen Anglas 3 Bottle-nosed Dolphins and further along toward Cerreg Wasted 4 Common Dolphins plus a calf. Bird wise a flock of 12 Grey lag Geese flew over heading north almost certainly feral birds. Lesser Whitethroat still in the same area probably breeding.Off shore several Manx Shearwaters.

Storm Petrels

Myself & Walrus joined the Teifi Ringing Group at Strumble last night for a try at catching a few Storm Petrels. Set up by approx 23.30 & success was almost instant & 5 birds were ringed in not much over an hour as well as plenty of activity around the net area. A Manx Shearwater managed to bounce out of the net a bit later on & the decision was made to pack up & nets were down by 2 a.m. One of the birds trapped had it's right foot missing, something seen fairly often apparently due to attacks from below surface predators while at sea.

Goodwick 1st June.

A pair of Spotted Flycatchers on exactly the same territory as last year & a Cetti's belting it's song out at the west end of the moor was about the only bird interest. In the river the Mullet quite visible with some a good size.
